What? I only dropped hot metal on the back of my glove a tiny bit. I think I’ll switch to my welding gloves.
-
Left the house to come to work on this before 6 this morning as usual. Really didn’t feel like it this time but it’s not gonna build itself. Like my patriotic colored air/brake lines? #myzenith750
-
Talking with the CEO of Masten Aerospace (and SFF Chairman) today in a couple hours on the podcast. Anyone have any questions for him?
-
Low tech noggin protection. #myzenith750
-
I spend too much of my week looking at screens. Very few things make me happier than making things with my hands. #myzenith750
-
Been podcasting with the same equipment since 2009. Today the upgrades arrived. I WILL RECORD ALL THE THINGS.
-
This airplane has no middle seats to keep open.
-
I’m a HUGE fan of these @isotunesaudio PRO Bluetooth headphones. Sweat and dust-proof with a 27db noise reduction rating. Hard to spend hours in the hangar airplane building without them. #myzenith750
-
This mornings project is adding access panels in places that should probably become standard locations for them on this airplane. I don’t like having areas that are inaccessible without having to drill out rivets. #myzenith750
-
A little light evening studying.
-
Looks like a mess but one foot in front of the other. #myzenith750
-
Finally. Civilization.
-
Every once in a while something takes way longer than planned. This seat pan took more than two hours to get situated in its final place. #planebuilderproblems #myzenith750
-
I left the pilot side top wing skin off to run electrical and pitot lines on this side. All done so it’s wing rivet day. #myzenith750
-
I’ve stuck to the plans for the most part. Every once in a while there’s a thing I want that’s not standard. Like a removable pitot tube. Super happy with the way this came out. #myzenith750
-
Needed some work done inside the rear fuselage and I don’t get close to fitting in the access panel. Caleb to the rescue. #myzenith750
-
Time to rivet the baggage area #myzenith750
-
I have seen a few flying models of this plane where they left the seats unpadded and uncovered. I don’t care how tough you think you are, nothing says uncomfortable like flying in a plane with lawn chair seating. Fancy memory foam and fine material covering for this guy. Soon. #myzenith750
-
I’ve been working on this plane too long to not yet have been able to sit in it and make airplane noises. Seems like a good time to make the seats. Now I just need to relearn how to use a sewing machine. #myzenith750
-
We moved to the North Carolina Mountains 8 years ago and it felt like quite a risky move at the time. I’ve never grown tired of my daily 3 mile walk loop even though I’ve seen some of these scenes a thousand times.
-
We had to take our Russian Blue cat Valentine to the vet today for a minor issue. This is more complicated than it seems these days. Instructions involved leaving her at the door after calling to announce we had arrived. She was not amused but is now back at home and just knocked my toothpaste tube off the counter while meowing at me for attention. Must be feeling better.
-
Time to take the tiger for its annual inspection. Will be down for about two weeks. I’ll have to get single engine current :)
-
Airport is a dead zone today.
-
My daily walk route could be worse.
-
Does this count as social distancing? I believe it does. #tigerbaron
-
My version of making lemonade. Electric and pitot lines being run. #myzenith750
-
Test fitting the seats and baggage floor. Daylight savings only got me so far. #myzenith750
-
Finally warm enough to get back to work on this thing. #myzenith750

Oh keto, how I love thee. Monday night homemade prime rib for what it costs to go to Chipotle. Yes please.
-
Flying airplanes again. #tigerbaron
-
I’ve made the mistake of falling in love with espresso which means my morning cup of coffee is now a multi step ordeal. Totally worth it.
-
Ran out of bottles when bottling this batch of mead. Then in remembered we are the south. One thing we definitely have here is mason jars!
-
You’d think after all these years of hanging around airports it would get old. Nope.
-
Morning tool warm up. #myzenith750
-
Been a pair of minutes since I’ve screwed something up on my airplane build. Making 8 of these. They should be cut like the one on the right. The one on the left is an epic fail on my part. #myzenith750
-
Fun evening at a Christmas party with some new friends and some old ones.
-
Working in the shop today and Apple is busy protecting my hearing.
-
It’s time to make the airplanes. #myzenith750
-
So I was elected President of an old school organization, the Western North Carolina Pilots Association. Old school to the point where the President gets a custom made gavel. I wonder if they’re gonna be ready for the kinds of changes I’m going to be making. Starting with the gavel...
-
Been fishing on Douglas Lake several times. #tigerbaron
-
I have a cat that is bigger than my co pilot today. #tigerbaron
-
Logging some Cirrus time today. #nottigerbaron
-
We lived just a few miles from here for a decade and I’ve never been to this airport before. #tigerbaron
-
Caleb left the airport and took a job making wine at Biltmore to put himself through school. He brings home wine almost every day. Can you tell this week was Merlot?
-
Apparently I have a roll of about 1000 of these left.
-
Second star to the right, straight on till morning #tigerbaron
-
Rain or shine #tigerbaron
-
Apparently Douglas Adams wrote fortune cookie fortunes.
-
44 degrees INSIDE the hangar but the plane isn’t going to build itself. Suck it up buttercup. #myzenith750
-
Took too long of a break from the airplane build. Back to work! #myzenith750
-
It certainly gets attention. #tigerbaron
-
My copilot is pretty.
-
Such and honor and privilege to have spent the last week with the men of the 100th bomb group and their families. Got a little flying in too :). Map credit to #foreflight
-
5 empty seats is weird.
-
Incredible weekend with these men. When the weekend started there were 10. Dewey Christopher passed away in his sleep here at the reunion. Blue skies Dewey.
-
War stories with B-17 pilots.
-
Oh nothing, just spending the day with WWII veterans at the National Museum of World War II.
-
Just an ordinary day. The guy in the red? He’s a WWII B-17 pilot and I just flew him to Colorado Springs for a reunion.
-
Headed to Colorado Springs tomorrow. Apparently they are in for a slight change of weather in the next 18 hours.
-
Blaze pizza keto crust. Michael’s score is about a 4.7 out of 5.
-
Take your wife to see Orson Scott Card and she sketches him instead of taking pictures. Welcome to my world.
-
Flew to Mexico MO and back for the Zenith Open House yesterday. Did I take a single picture at the event? Nope. #facepalm
-
Got my multi engine rating today. I didn’t even screw up.
-
Measuring distances on opposite sides of the wings to make sure they are lined up using a digital tape measure with a laser on it. Was hoping for them to be “pretty close”, but exactly the same will do too :)
-
Test fitting the tail. #myzenith750
-
Feels weird to land in Millington. I was stationed here in 1993.
-
Putting the wings on. Feels awesome. #myzenith750
-
Headroom is a problem in almost every light airplane I fly. And I’m not even super tall.
-
Where we’re going we don’t neeeed roads.
-
Well Lowe’s is doing a few things right
-
I have “hired” help this morning. #myzenith750
-
Quiet afternoon with the best beer in America, a book and a pretty artist. Not too shabby. #makecheatdaycount
-
Light morning. Only 420 holes before the sun came up. #myzenith750
-
Flying a lighter plane today. Although most small planes are lighter than a P Baron.
-
Cool airplane spotting for today: Piaggio 180
-
Starting on the dreaded wing root skins. Trying to make aluminum go into shapes it really doesn’t want to go... #myzenith750
-
It’s a hard-knock life...
-
It’s time to make the airplane. #myzenith750
-
In the early morning I put one of these in my coffee. I’m currently questioning why we have them next to each other in the pantry. For... reasons.
-
Made it to Airventure with my favorite person. Only had to warm water in a coffee pot to bathe one time to get here. #campscholler
-
I was never good at offices anyway.
-
One last engine out practice. Hope to never see this unexpectedly.
-
My view of Lake Lure is better than yours. #nobodyputsbaroninthecorner

Time to stretch the tiger’s legs. #tigerbaron
-
Doing something. Important?? #myzenith750
-
The same thing we do at 6am every day Pinky. #myzenith750
-
Flying planes. Again.
-
Today’s cool airplane spotting of the day: A Rutan Long EZ. This is an airplane I’ve wanted since I was a kid. Unfortunately my Dutch/Norwegian shoulders are too broad to fit comfortably. And no there is nothing wrong with it. The engine is in the tail so when you park it and get out you retract the nose gear and sit it on the nose so it doesn’t tip backwards.
-
I hear “I could never build an airplane” a lot. Yes you can. You just have to be willing to spend a couple thousand hours over a couple years paying very careful attention to endless details. This is the only place this jam nut on the linear actuator is mentioned. Check. #myzenith750
-
I couldn’t find this tiny part so I made it from the plans specs from scrap aluminum. As soon as I finished I found it. #myzenith750
-
Made 24 of these L angles this morning. I must be slacking, only 384 holes before 8am. And yes, I counted because... well reasons. #myzenith750
-
Today’s cool airplane spotting: a brand new Honda jet. Very nice.
-
Before the work day even started today I got the nose skin pulled over. Chipping away every day. #myzenith750
-
Asheville airport cool airplane sighting of the day: Zenith 601 being delivered to a new owner in Norfolk.
-
One of my all time favorite aircraft
-
We only eat bread once or twice a month so when we do we really try to make it special. Tonight it’s a mountain of dinner plate sized homemade garlic naan.
-
This morning’s progress beginning at 6am was 340 holes on the bottom skin and main spar each drilled twice to final size. I think I can skip my shoulder workout today. In case you were wondering, a @boschtoolsna drill can easily drill 680 holes on 1 and a half batteries. #myzenith750
-
A lot of people tell me they just don't have time for working out, or learning new things, or long term projects of passion etc. Well what were you doing at 5am this morning? Yeah... #myzenith750
-
The second wing is going 10 times faster now that I sort of know what I’m doing #myzenith750
-
Never seen a Zenith 801 before and now I’ve seen two in person in one week.
-
Busted.
-
I wonder if I can still score a free breakfast with this...
-
A rare Zenith 801 sighting at KAVL today. Don’t think I’ve ever seen one in person.
-
Yeah, we live here.
-
Hey that spinny thing... well it isn’t.... #tigerbaron
-
At the end of the training just for fun I took off from runway 4 at JFK and experienced a double bird strike climbing out. I made it back to runway 13 in a Baron. Take that Sully! #sullyisarealhero
-
Ran out yesterday to check the tie-downs on the Skyhawk we took down here. No hangars available so I had to watch it try to fly a little while tied down.
-
Back in the Baron simulator again. If classes were like this in grade school, maybe kids would pay attention.
-
The seminar I’m at has my friend Deb in a little bit of a Wile E Coyote predicament

Learning to fly a twin engine airplane on one engine makes for some strange flight paths on FlightAware #tigerbaron
-
Birthday present from my wife. Awesomesauce. #myzenith750
-
This is odd. In the same hangar as the Baron is a Pilatus painted like a Zebra. Welcome to the zoo hangar. #tigerbaron
-
Finally got it home #tigerbaron
-
Welcome to my office #tigerbaron
-
So long Arizona #tigerbaron
-
This is not the best movie choice for a pilot lounge
-
Yeah, today I piloted a Baron on an epic route. #tigerbaron
-
Can actually see the golden gate this time across.
-
Clouds or snow covered tundra?
-
When your friend calls and asks if you want to come check out a brand new Baron...you say yes.
-
If we can get over the drama with the seller my trip across the country in the Baron next week will look something like this. #tigerbaron
-
Yeah these three fluted L angles took an hour. Funny how some parts fly by and others seem to take an afternoon. #myzenith750
-
It’s top wing skin day. #myzenith750
-
Full motion simulator training at Executive Flight Training today. Awesome
-
Didn’t take enough pictures but I put my first couple hours in a multi engine airplane in my logbook today. That body of water would be the Atlantic Ocean.
-
Been a strange couple months
-
This says I’m ready for the actual Instrument written. But I don’t feel ready.
-
He’s a pretty calm pilot

Took out CEO flying for the first time today. Yeah we live here...
-
How to tell from your track log which of your flights today was instrument training. I don’t remember doing any loops... #foreflight

Lazy time is over. #myzenith750

Yeah, the airplane we are buying is painted like a Tiger

My office today

Got some news to be revealed next week. This is your clue. Special prize for anyone who guesses correctly. My parents and JMo clan are not eligible for guessing :)

Found this in a used bookstore. Copyright 1979.

Today was a new day and a new adventure with my favorite person
-
She thought a mason jar salad meant regular people sized mason jar...
-
Just had dinner with SR 71 pilot Col Richard Graham. Now on to him telling us stories of the worlds fastest aircraft.
-
Hey, if you guys could just hold this parade until we get a pic, that’d be grrreeeaattt.
-
Traffic jam on Splash Mountain.

Disney is way easier when your kids are adults.
-
Another evening, another couple hundred holes. #myzenith750
-
Our mail carrier’s latest trick is to leave our stuff on a garbage can.
-
Doesn’t seem like proper Halloween weather here.
-
One of the million things to do before the plane flies sometime next year is to come up with a flight test plan. It’s fairly daunting but turns out that EAA just released a guide book and flight test card set. Still seems super daunting but at least now I have an example framework to use. #myzenith750
-
What? Like your plane doesn’t need a night light. Don’t judge. #myzenith750
-
The most commonly asked question from experienced builders is how well the “match drilled holes” work out. The answer is “pretty good” with the exception of the skins. I had to deal with this on the fuselage in many areas and now the wing skins. #myzenith750
-
I’m like a commercial for the ball jar company. This is not an unusual number of homemade things in the works at any given time for me. Any guesses?
-
It’s a rough life.
-
Business meeting in Gatlinburg today. Always fun to be able to fly myself for work
-
Passenger side bottom wing skin day. #myzenith750
-
Found out it’s extremely difficult to photograph a heads up display but I took a shot. Kinda see though. One of my side projects :)
-
Started using Strides (app) to encourage new habits. My Sept report for 30 mins of moderate to vigorous exercise isn’t too shabby. There are 12 other habits I’m working on with similar success. Sept was a good month.
-
Been probably 20 years since I burned myself with a soldering iron so I made sure this was a good one.
-
Rear spar complete. That was more rivets than I thought. But the night is cool, the tunes are awesome. Next up is skinning the wing! #myzenith750
-
I’m ready to put the skin on this wing. I guess this means I have to stop using the space between the ribs as an excuse for not putting all of these parts and tools away. #myzenith750
-
Been chasing an electrical problem in my fuel system on my old Jeep for couple days. Found you you little bastard. Broken green wire no fuel.
-
Lunch?

Good eatin size

Graduated Navy boot camp 25 years ago today.

Airplanes and lies
-
Caleb took Ellie swimming at Hooker Falls. Kind of hard to tell who was having more fun.
-
Julie and I are going to have to alter our workout route. We’ve seen a bear in this location every day we been gone this way for about a week. He just ran from right to left 150 meters ahead. Going to start going the other way instead. #mountianlivingproblems
-
Come visit Lisa and Randy at Tin Cat downtown Asheville today and tomorrow. Awesome art.
-
Even after hiking Julie has amazing hair. Great time with family we rarely get to see today.
-
Inside from the shop for 20 minutes before I noticed I’ve got a rivet stuck to my magnetic Fitbit band. #myzenith750
-
Random scene from my workout “loop”.
-
At GMU there’s a fantastic restaurant and playground right on the airfield. Anthony always pulls his Grumman Cheetah right up to the playground so kids can get a first hand experience.
-
Hazy as I turned over Greenville SC
-
Kinda wondering if they are doing sailing lessons at Lake Julian as I flew over.
-
I’ve gotten in the habit of working with sheet-metal with gloves on. Because when I don’t…
-
Today in adventures in (late) keto lunches: keto pizza. Came out great.
-
Seems silly to work inside on a day like today. Covered porch for the win. Elli thinks computers are boring though.
-
Was only two weeks ago but seems like longer #myzenith750
-
There’s actually more room in the garage with the Jeep (which needs some TLC) and lawn mower (and wing) than there was when the fuselage was in there.
-
With the fuselage at the hangar it’s now weeknight wings work at home. #myzenith750
-
6 planes came over and 30 or more people including several new/curious at our EAA cookout.
-
Nosewheel. Almost. Sigh. #myzenith750
-
Nosewheel and strut are done. Painted the strut a metallic black for now. It’ll go on the plane Tuesday when I swing by the hangar. #myzenith750
-
Today in adventures in keto lunches… Strawberry post workout shake
-
On my bucket list is to fly an airplane I built myself to AirVenture in Oshkosh. If 2019 is the year for this, the clock is ticking. #myzenith750 #eaa #osh19
-
Didn’t even over engineer the hole template for this. I have a CMC and could have made a jig but this was faster #myzenith750
-
I died by Zombie. #betrayal
-
Today in adventures in keto lunches... everything “bagels”
-
Much more room in the hangar than my garage :) #myzenith750
-
Today in experiments in new Keto lunches we have Egg Loaf with Caramel flavored oil
-
Keto blueberry mug cake turned out really well.
-
Firewall is almost done. Mr Metal man on the angle drill. #myzenith750
-
Need to put the nose gear on it to move to the hangar so firewall is next. #myzenith750
-
If you’ve been here you know.
-
Current state of affairs: Sitting behind a DC-3 with Julie, the moon is trying to peek through the clouds and a Sonex Microjet is doing aerobatics.
-
That’s a lotta LEDs
-
Attempt at the night airshow round two.
-
Aaannnddd night airshow cancelled
-
Night air show time.
-
Zenith Aircraft is now apparently doing a camper kit. I looked for wings. Nadda. Maybe it’s supposed to be a lifting body. Hoist it to 35k feet on the belly of a B-52 with the family on board and the let the screamcation begin.
-
Good morning Airventure

Current state of my life.
-
Planning lunch with Caleb to go over his new business ideas. Pho and sailboat restoration much?
-
I’m good at getting the interns when donating blood.
-
Exactly 25 years ago I embarked on what seemed like a crazy adventure to a suburban kid from Chicago. I had absolutely no idea how it would build on the foundation my parents instilled in me and became core to who I am as an adult.
-
On a new training program. Julie is strength training, Caleb is just starting Budo Taijutsu. I don’t want to be left behind in our family fitness quest.
-
I pick three to five new Japanese words to learn every day at random (yes I wrote an app for it). Sometimes it makes for strange combinations...
-
Gary gives a play by play as Mike G washes his plane. Mike G is the guy who says with pride “I’ve not washed this plane in 10 years”. We think he may have been switched with a clone by Aliens.
-
Hendersonville airport grass runway last night.
-
Hard to tell until we move the table under it but it’s on it’s own landing gear for the first time. #myzenith750
-
He looks good working hard. Just happened to pass by him on the way to my hangar.
-
Got to fly a terrific new airplane and made a new friend. Over the Mount Mitchell visitors center, around Mountain Air Airport and back in about 1/2 the time it usually takes. RV-10s are fast :)
-
New RV-10 in Asheville is my chariot today. It’s a rough life.
-
Managed to snag a way too short lunch with family visiting from Norway.
-
Making scale paper models to see if we can get a Zenith 750 and an RV-6A in a 48 foot T hanger together. #myzenith750
-
Channeling my inner JJ Abrams. #lensflare
-
I found a pretty lady.

Adventure happens to adventurers.
-
Last task before weight on wheels. Trying to hurry now because a hangar opened at AVL at the end of the month and we want to roll it onto the trailer rather than carry it. #myzenith750
-
New glasses from Zeni are 35 bucks. Sheesh that’s a good deal.
-
My planner has themes for the week. Some are better than others. Some are worth sharing.
-
Will they be friends? Maybe. Will they mildly tolerate each other? More likely.
-
It’s very difficult to be unhappy if you’re grateful. This is one of the LESS scenic parts of my workout loop.
-
Wheels! #myzenith750
-
Wheel hubs. Check. Brake calipers. Check. Rotors. Check. Tools. Check. Baby powder... sigh. Check. Imma have fresh smelling wheels. #myzenith750
-
One of my favorite things about small town living is the little things. A real barber shop with men talking about manly things on a Friday morning is one of them.
-
In 1986 or so I asked for a Dremel for Christmas. This old thing helped me build model railroads, model planes and any number of projects over the years as an adult. I was a free range kid before there was a name for it. It shaped who I am. My parents bought power tools for their 10 year old and I still have all of my original fingers. Anyway it finally died. I feel kinda sad about it. So I bought another one. Here’s to another 32 years of making crap with Dremel tools.
-
A VERY gusty crosswind landing to a completely empty airport. #notmyprettiestlanding
-
Through Aviation I’ve become friends with so many people of all ages and backgrounds. Dave smiles like this every second he’s flying.
-
Landing gear minus the wheels. I’ll tighten the bolts down when I am done measuring to make sure it’s aligned correctly #myzenith750
-
Couple of my favorite people are helping Grandpa build garden steps today.
-
Now THIS is an office.
-
My chariot for the afternoon. Not too shabby.
-
Was really on a roll on the landing gear until I overheated my compressor motor. Apparently I have a better duty cycle than an 8 gallon compressor. #myzenith750
-
I’m always surprised by how nice but underutilized the Rutherfordton airport is. I’m thinking that my Zenith flight testing will be here if they have an available hangar.
-
Had to divert on my flight home. Someone blew a tire and “exited” the end of the runway. Landing at another airport sounded cheaper than holding in the air for a hour.
-
Been thinking about my NEXT plane build. This is high on the list. Maybe in a different color though.
-
The flying club airplanes and civil air patrol are lined up like little soldiers this morning
-
Flipped a coin on which wing to start first. Heads was the call so the right wing it is. #myzenith750
-
Did some repairs on Marc’s GPS unit. The backup battery was buried and soldered to the board. Sheesh.
-
Building airplanes is hard on my hands. My knuckles are finally healed from the last thing and now I skip a cutoff wheel across a longeron and nick it again. #itsjustafleshwound #myzenith750
-
My Rosie the riveter pose. She did it better but I’m having fun anyway. #myzenith750
-
NOW it’s really looking like an airplane. #myzenith750
-
Tonight I arranged for three men who were T-38 Instructors to give a talk about some of their experiences. It was much much funnier than I expected. What a great privilege it is to not only know these guys but to get to call them my friends.
-
My co pilot is hotter than yours.
-
Hmm, that looks like a runway...
-
Spent the afternoon watching my friend Simon do his Private Pilot Exam at Rutherford airport. The newest pilot in the US at this very moment is a Brit! Congratulations buddy!
-
When you have a CNC in your shop making things like stands for your sprout jars takes 5 minutes.
-
When we moved to the mountains 6 years ago we dreamed of no commute, quiet evenings with a book on the covered porch together, tea or bourbon and a view of nature. Do yourself a favor and jump off a cliff. It’s worth it.
-
Pretty girl in an airplane. Life is good.
-
Hopped over to Greenville for lunch in the Skylane.
-
Flying Young eagles again today. Jeff has a plane full of female Civil Air Patrol cadets.
-
These guys have a new definition of “some assembly required”. This is like step 420... and that’s coming from someone building an airplane. #inventables
-
Tonight I'm giving a seminar called "So, you want to build an airplane?". 7pm at 21 Aviation Way at the Asheville Airport. All of the cool kids are coming.
-
I’ve always considered myself a dog person. I like cats, but somewhat indifferent. Valentine has decided that I’m her person. She follows me around and is almost frantic to get into my lap sometimes. It’s easier on my ego if I think of her as a stealthy murder machine rather than a fluffy lap cat.
-
Fort Sumter boat and tour. No too shabby.
-
Caleb can no longer say “I’ve never been on a submarine before”. Museum ships totally count.
-
One of the things I find most odd about the 1950s refit of the Yorktown was the addition of a Westinghouse escalator. It seems really out of place.

My grandfather served in the 38 Bomber Group in the Pacific in WWII. Turns out someone is still making replica patches and I picked one up for my flight jacket.

I love seeing people do things that scare them.

I asked Miss Shaina (@glitter_supergirl96) if she had any dinner ideas. “Captn Crunch breaded chicken” she said. Ask and you shall receive. It’s wrong how awesome it turned out.
-
The dog helped with the chicken breading. Can you tell?
-
Just when you thought it was feeling like spring. #mountainlife

Lake Jocassee
-
