Journals are private. Period.
Personal journals and diaries deserve stronger legal and moral protections from forced disclosure in civil lawsuits.
Morally, privacy of self-reflection is fundamental to human dignity. Legally, we should push for reforms—such as a qualified privilege for purely personal writings, stricter relevance thresholds, or mandatory redactions/sealing when privacy outweighs probative value.
Until then, the lesson is harsh: in litigation, almost nothing stays truly private if it’s written down. Thoughts shouldn’t cost you your dignity or freedom.
