I’m working on that urge to one-up everyone in conversation instead of listening. I think most of us do this:

Fred: " I went hiking yesterday; it was a great time with my family."

Me: “The best hiking trip I ever went on was in the New Zealand Outback. It makes all other hikes seem like a walk through a dark alley. It was like being a character in LOTR…”

This is an extreme example, but the correct response would be to ask a question about what the other person told you, not immediately jump to your experience and why it’s better than theirs.
