First Flight for “Doc”

For the first time since 1956, the B-29 known as Doc took to the sky on a sunny morning in Wichita, Kansas. This video includes highlights from footage captured during first flight. More information at http://www.b-29doc.com

The April fools prank I wish was real

I present to you the fictional Crave Copter. Very few things could make me happier. Maybe a Portillos copter…

JJ Abrams newest documentary series episode two features my dear friend Robert

My Dear friend Robert is the focus of Episode two of JJ Abrams / Bad Robot’s latest documentary series. Robert and his team are an amazing group and I’m so glad JJ did such a good job doing something I tried to do for this competition for years. I get to say “I knew them before” and nothing could make me happier.

A hard left turn for me

I think a lot about direction lately. My trip to Daytona to meet with other EAA leaders has really solidified what I’m looking for.

This sums it up perfectly in so many ways:

Hey, once upon a younger year
When all our shadows disappeared
The animals inside came out to play
Hey, when face to face with all our fears
Learned our lessons through the tears
Made memories we knew would never fade

One day my father—he told me,
“Son, don’t let it slip away”
He took me in his arms, I heard him say,

“When you get older
Your wild heart will live for younger days
Think of me if ever you’re afraid.”

He said, “One day you’ll leave this world behind
So live a life you will remember.”
My father told me when I was just a child
These are the nights that never die
My father told me

When thunder clouds start pouring down
Light a fire they can’t put out
Carve your name into those shinning stars
He said, “Go venture far beyond the shores.
Don’t forsake this life of yours.
I’ll guide you home no matter where you are.”

One day my father—he told me,
“Son, don’t let it slip away.”
When I was just a kid I heard him say,

“When you get older
Your wild heart will live for younger days
Think of me if ever you’re afraid.”

He said, “One day you’ll leave this world behind
So live a life you will remember.”
My father told me when I was just a child
These are the nights that never die
My father told me

These are the nights that never die
My father told me

Avicii – The Nights

I’ve always been an instigator

In an email exchange this morning a friend of mind called me an instigator who uses “science” as an excuse for it.

Yeah, this is not a new thing. Here’s some evidence from 2011…

I wonder how long it took them to clean up the flour…

Why didn’t anyone tell me about “Four Chord Song”?

I don’t know people, maybe I need better friends. Somehow in 2011 I missed this and it’s the best thing ever.

Aerial work at a llama farm. Why didn’t someone tell me llama’s are so awesome?!?

Caleb and I did some aerial footage of a llama farm this evening. I can’t believe this is a job. I haven’t gone through all of the video, but here’s a preview.

Automation testing

Julie braved the cold and wind today as I worked on programming N609JD to inspect buildings and structures autonomously.

Here’s the launch before it takes off on it’s mission.

Unedited first day at the Asheville Model Aircraft club

Turns out there’s a terrific model aircraft club that has a field in an unbelievable location just 20 minutes from my house. I’ve been looking for a place to practice flying and test systems to be ready for complicated production work .

The club has about 80 members, and in the 45 minutes we were there yesterday (a Friday) there were probably 20 airplanes in the air at different times.

Also, it’s hard to beat the view. Here’s my unedited footage of the location.
