My Dear friend Robert is the focus of Episode two of JJ Abrams / Bad Robot’s latest documentary series. Robert and his team are an amazing group and I’m so glad JJ did such a good job doing something I tried to do for this competition for years. I get to say “I knew them before” and nothing could make me happier.

[youtube=://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-8-pkCXhKw&w=854&h=480]

I think a lot about direction lately. My trip to Daytona to meet with other EAA leaders has really solidified what I’m looking for.

This sums it up perfectly in so many ways:

[youtube=://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_AztwklyIc&w=854&h=480]

Hey, once upon a younger year
When all our shadows disappeared
The animals inside came out to play
Hey, when face to face with all our fears
Learned our lessons through the tears
Made memories we knew would never fade

In an email exchange this morning a friend of mind called me an instigator who uses “science” as an excuse for it.

Yeah, this is not a new thing.

Turns out there’s a terrific model aircraft club that has a field in an unbelievable location just 20 minutes from my house. I’ve been looking for a place to practice flying and test systems to be ready for complicated production work .

The club has about 80 members, and in the 45 minutes we were there yesterday (a Friday) there were probably 20 airplanes in the air at different times.

Also, it’s hard to beat the view. Here’s my unedited footage of the location.

The audio quality is shockingly bad in this video. This was on Feb 18th, at Ignite-DC. I’d like to do a new spin on this talk soon. This is an Ignite talk. If you’re not familiar with Ignite, the talks are all EXACTLY 5 mins. You get 20 slides that auto advance every 15 seconds. It’s a real challenge to not get behind on the slides.

Despite the challenge of giving a compelling talk in this format, I do really enjoy it. It forces presenters to get the point in 5 minutes and you can get through quite a few really great ideas in a 90 minute session.

Career analyst Dan Pink examines the puzzle of motivation, starting with a fact that social scientists know but most managers don’t: Traditional rewards aren’t always as effective as we think. Listen for illuminating stories – and maybe, a way forward. http://video.ted.com/assets/player/swf/EmbedPlayer.swf

Microsoft finally came to their senses and dropped those stupid Seinfeld/Gates ads that left everyone scratching their heads. The new ones are a direct dig on Apple’s Mac/PC ads (finally) and have some interesting tidbits like “I’m a human being, not a human doing, not a human thinking. A human being”.

A least these are interesting. Microsoft still looks like they want to be the cool kids but know that Apple actually is, but at least these are direct and don’t involve shoe stores or and underwear adjustment by Gates.
