I’ve been eyeing an Altair remake. I don’t know why, I just love being close to the metal on machines. I’m a little too young to remember the Altair and I don’t recall ever seeing one in person.

I do however understand how it works and am fascinated by what it must have felt like to run programs you came up with and saved on paper tape on it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8InWiihlIQw

My Uncle ran his business on a Commodore VIC-20 for many years and I still have the Commodore 64 that I used until I graduated High School in 1993. I don’t recall when it went from being my Dad’s computer to mine, but I don’t think he minded me stealing it terribly much.

Thanks to Tim Ferris for this quote today:

“Inspiration is for amateurs — the rest of us just show up and get to work. And the belief that things will grow out of the activity itself and that you will, through work, bump into other possibilities and kick open other doors that you would never have dreamt of if you were just sitting around looking for a great ‘art idea’.” -Chuck Close, American artist who achieved fame as a photorealist through massive-scale portraits

Here are three spins. The first I intentionally recovered poorly. The other two were more “textbook” recoveries.

This is just the graph of the slip/skid sensors.

Interesting that there is a clear pattern and threshold.

The goal here is to detect and give enough warning to a pilot to avoid and intervene on an impending unintentional spin entry.

Archived Comments

Paul T Breed (2017-03-13 00:31:45):

The traditional training spin is not what kills people…
Next time you want to do spins go up and set up a fake landing pattern at altitude…
Then get slow and do the base to final turn with some skid…. cross the controls and keep pulling back til it departs controlled flight… be high and be prepared as it will snap to inverted so fast you won’t know what happened….

I’m currently working on detecting loss of control (LOC) on an overshoot of base to final. Using data models in X-Plane which depending on the aircraft model is known to be pretty accurate (there’s a certified commercial version suitable for flight training). Not practical to do this in an actual airplane for obvious reasons like crashing and fireballs.

Anyway, here’s a screenshot of data gathering. I’m collecting about 50 data points 10 times per second. I’m feeding this into a learning algorithm to teach it to predict the actions which may lead to an accelerated stall and/or spin.

I hear nightmare stories from people all the time on AT+T’s customer service… Yesterday afternoon Julie and I noticed a sudden loss of cell service at home. We have identical phones (other than color) and we’re both on Sprint. We’ve been happy Sprint customers for about 6 years now, and issues are rare.

I’ve worked on cell towers over the years and am an expert in radio communications, so I’m pretty patient with this stuff. We forget sometimes that we’re talking on two way radios when we use these things. Radio signals are subject to all kinds of potential interference, and the cell carriers have thousands and thousands of towers to manage. Many of them are in very remote locations, and since we live in the mountains, it’s especially remote here. The cellular system is complicated, and sometimes I’m amazed that the whole thing works at all.

I’m working from home today. Since on these days I set my own hours, I started really early. By 10am, I needed a break, so I decided to run over to the grocery store to grab some milk. There was an unusually large number of people in line for 10am on a Tuesday and the checkout ladies were struggling to keep up. By the time I was in line, I was 7 people back. A couple people in front of me were pretty frustrated with the length of the line and were being pretty vocal about it.

I ordered a monitor from TigerDirect last week that included a $50 rebate in the box. I filled it in and mailed it. I have about a 50% success rate with actually receiving rebate checks when I buy something which is pretty sad.

Today I got an email from TigerDirect saying that they have received my rebate claim and they are processing it. WOW. It’s funny how a quick email can make a huge difference in the confidence level I have in a company.

I’ve been interested in the brain and how it works for years. My Uncle had a massive stroke about 10 years ago and lost much of his ability to communicate through speech. Dr Taylor is a brain scientist who lived through a stroke of her own and a long recovery. This is a great talk about seeing a stroke and some of our brain functions through a scientist’s eyes as her own brain starts to unravel.http://static.videoegg.com/ted/flash/loader.swf Her book is on lulu here.My Uncle Don passed away in January. I’m user number 12353 which is pretty early on the nerd-o-meter. I used to be an avid reader, but my readership has waned of late. “Back in the day” (think 1999) it was not uncommon for me to check Slashdot every 10 minutes to see what news had broken. The slashdot format was one truly innovative when it was launched and it helped usher in the era of user interaction on the internet.

I stumbled on this in the Urban Dictionary today: "

Not good. Bad. The early Jazz musicians would say that a guy could really “Blow” if he had a good sound when playing the horn. If he couldn’t play very well then they would say that he was “Sucking” on that horn. That’s where the term “Suck” as being something bad came from. He plays that horn so poorly that he must be sucking on it. He doesn’t blow, he sucks.

"

My brother turned me on to Anberlin this week. Wow, what planet have I been on that I missed these guys?

I’d suggest turning it up if you listen to their stuff.

We were going to the Yankees/RedSox game a few weeks ago and saw this guy practicing the trumpet on the GW Bridge. Too funny:

“A good student can get a good education anywhere that has a decent library and a handful of good teachers—which is the most you ever get in the Ivy League or other high-reputation schools.” – Orson Scott Card

I’ve really been into mind mapping for the last 6 months or so and dropped some cash on the product I found to be the best for me: NovaMind.

I’ve been using it every day for 6 months on my old trusty PowerBook and yesterday it crashed on open. This has never happened before. The crash reporter popped up, I hit send and it restarted. It’s been working fine since.

This morning I get an email from their tech support. Yes, someone actually reads their crash reports, suggested a fix in a quicktime that was trying to load, and told me I should let them know if it happens again.
